" TO LOVE IS
THE ONLY WAY TO PENETRATE INTO A THING. TO UNDERSTAND GOD, ONE MUST
LOVE HIM, TO UNDERSTAND A WOMAN, ONE MUST LOVE HER; UNDERSTANDING IS
IN PROPORTION TO LOVE." (57)
Albert
Aurier
When an
artist loves his work it shows, but only to the receptive,
lover-viewer. There are those who are as cold to passion as they are
dispassionate; those who cannot experience grief because they are
too young to know death; those who will not let themselves love
because they are too full of hatred, anger, or fear. Is it any
wonder that so little of art is either understood or understandable?
" Great
works of art should look as though they were made in joy. Real joy
is a tremendous activity, dull drudgery is nothing to it. The
drudgery that kills is not half the work that joy is. " (58)
Robert Henri
" The pose
coveted by our young intellectuals is no longer that of the stirred
lover of the beautiful but the poker face of the critic, who sniffs
and judges." (59) Rudolf Arnheim
" It takes
wit, and interest and energy to be happy. The pursuit of happiness
is a great activity. One must be open and alive. It is the greatest
feat man has to accomplish, and spirits must flow. There are no easy
ruts to get into which lead to happiness. A man must become
interesting to himself and must become actually expressive before he
can be happy. " (60)
