A young
woman spoke up courageously at a meeting, saying that she didn't
believe the old axiom about art... that time is the test... and that
good art survives.
I say she was courageous for she dared to question out loud the
accepted belief that I and many others hold dearly.
The old grand master weeder, time, once more had to be questioned.
The conclusion is, yet one more time, that though it is difficult to
fully grasp, and even harder to admit to, no artist will ever know
during his lifetime, the true value of his art, except within his
own soul. And neither will anyone else. Trends and fads will pale,
leaving time to sweep away "all but the most transcendent works
of art." (103) Most art will "revert to the status of objects
that record more or less faithfully the history of taste." (104)
We would
wish it were different, but it is not.
