The degree
of convexity or concavity, transmits the corresponding
interpretation.
As a student learning to draw, I remember puzzling over why the
expression on a mouth didn't look right, only to discover I had used
the wrong curve. Looking up at a face from below, changes some of
the lines to concave lines, that when looking straight on, or from
above, are convex.
It is the curve, or straightness of a shape, that gives us its
essence. I will always remember discovering how Patrick Nagel could
convey the form of a human figure, without the use of shading but by
using outlines, and flat color.
Outlines, whether they are fuzzy or clear, are what give us
recognizable images, and are fundamental in art, giving a sculptural
quality. Individual brushstrokes have outlines. It is enjoyable to
see these.
