LIFESTYLE DICTATES TASTE
It is disturbing to see houses and apartments turn into white
mushrooms. The walls are white, the fixtures are white, even the oak
has been whitened. If there is any colour, it is pale, tinted with
white.
This bothers me, particularly since I'm into colour, colour in my
clothes, paintings, and surroundings. Then it occurs to me, that
maybe it has something to do with lifestyles. These people, that go
home to their monochromatic houses, are busy, busy, busy,
expectutives, with things coming at them from all directions, all
day long - glossy brochures here, hi-tech printouts there,
fax-machines, cellular telephones, hassle and hustle, with work
mates, bosses, employees, streets, rush hours, and coffee shops,
shopping at lunch, and buying groceries after work.
On the other hand, I get up leisurely, have a cup of coffee, or six,
go over what I did yesterday in the quiet solitude of my home,
wander into the studio, and plan out what I'm going to do. I'm now
at work, no jumping in the car, waiting in endless traffic jams; at
the end of the day (which I decide upon), I leave the solitude of my
studio, for the solitude of the rest of the house.
It becomes very clear to me, that white mushroom dwellers want
relief from their hectic day's sensory overload, while I put the
need for excitement and contact into paintings and sculptures, with
bright color, lines and shapes...remembrances of times had out in
the real world.
It is also a little disturbing to realize that there is small chance
of us meeting on common ground, where art is concerned anyway. We
just live different lifestyles
