INFATUATION AND ART
BUY WHAT
YOU LOVE BUT BE PREPARED TO FALL OUT OF LOVE WITH IT
It is a very good `anything' that doesn't tire with age.
I learned about infatuation in grade seven. Spying a pair of black
high-heels with silver on the pointed toes, I HAD to have them! The
slight problem of being the last pair, and just a bit too small, was
no deterrent. That they couldn't be worn for more than five minutes
at a time, was no matter.
Many times experienced artists, have mentioned that we should hang
our work up and live with it, for about a year before showing it,
and certainly before selling it. I have found this a good rule to
follow.
Over a long period of time, even years, the good art does stand up.
Sometimes the message is there, loud and true, sometimes it has
faded long before the paint ever will. Some become hard to part
with, others gather more and more dust.
Unfortunately, the buyer doesn't usually have the same luxury of
living with a piece of art without having to buy it. By getting to
know an artist's work he will be able to make better long lasting
selections.
The law of wine holds true for art as well. The beginner taster,
likes sweet `plonk', but later finds his tastes tending to more
distinctive flavours, and drier ones.
Still, there is nothing like original art on our walls... only by
looking at an awful lot of it, will we ever grow in our taste for
it.
And, there are some things lasting only five minutes, that are worth
it. I'll never forget those shoes.
