EVERY TINY
SCRATCH BECOMES PRECIOUS
My friends and I attended a show of a well known artist's work where
I noticed some small felt pen sketches, and commented, without
thinking, "Oh, I have lots of little black felt pen sketches... I
could show them too." June gave me this look, and exclaimed, "Weelll!...
You could if you're dead." I knew she was right.
CALLING "A SPADE A DIRTY SHOVEL"
I use an acquaintance's expression when talking about someone buying
an older artist's work in terms of investment, which is rather a
sordid thing, I try not to do too often. But the truth is, that the
moment a prolific artist dies, his work increases in price,
drastically. One has only to read through an auction catalogue to
find that this is true. Perhaps it has something to do with a
diminishing resource, or found treasure, but it can be a little sad,
none-the-less.
