The discovery that the world was almost round instead of flat, must
have influenced the art of the time dramatically. There was also a
time when we didn't think of the atmosphere as being like water or
earth, which flow. The way artists portray landscapes today include
the sky as an integral part, rather than something outside and
apart. With the exploration of outer space, we have expanded art to
include a science fiction genre, particularly in our movies such as
`Star Wars'.
The discovery of DNA and the entire microscopic biological world,
has led art off in tangents as small as their instigators.
The study of psychology, the exploration of the self, the id, ego,
the dream world, and the world of the subconscious, has taken
artists into places, untouched except by primitive witch doctors and
gurus. Surrealism is an art form that embodies these concepts.
There was a time when art had not explored the physical body of
muscles, tendons and bones. Thomas Eakins' paintings of these, must
have shocked the people of the time.
So it is, that art and technology, have been infants together, first
discovering their toes and fingers, then their adolescent selves,
others, and finally becoming adults, confronting the questions of
fitting in or not.
It is my opinion however, that art has been more affected by
technology than the reverse. With the need for greater harmony (quit
cutting ALL of the trees down) perhaps it is time for technology to
start paying more attention to art.
