THE ARTIST AS CHILD
The person who is able to view the world afresh is the lucky one who
has grasped everlasting youth. Very few are able to do this, for it
means putting away preconceived ideas.
It is because the most creative artists are also the most
questioning, and least accepting of the status quo, that they can
threaten established ways of thought. It is here that the artist
leaves off being a `child', and must confront his adult nature of
conscience and responsibility.
Of Vincent Van Gogh, it was said, "He had queer manners and was
often punished. He wasn't at school very long" (14) Johanna Van-Bonger
does not conceal the fact that Vincent was not a very well-behaved
child, "calling him self-willed." (15)
