The best
entertainment has ties to the real world, things we can relate to.
The TV. sitcom families are good examples: the Archie Bunker family
in the seventies, the Cosby family in the eighties, and the Bundies
in the nineties. The best music, drama, movies, literature and art,
make us laugh and cry, and wind us up in their spell. We love to be
entertained.
Nature, or the outdoors, is one of our favourite forms of
entertainment. So are sports.
If art seems to fail miserably compared to the others, it's probably
because I'm just more conscious of it. And if the odd time, upon
attending an opening nite show, I notice that most of the people are
more impressed with each other, than with the art, perhaps my
disappointment is due to high expectations. And now, if I notice
artists being side-tracked by becoming carnival acts, I hope it is
because they are would-be-actors and comedians and I am just too
serious about art.
"It's Painters and Players, a Vancouver arts celebration that
combines the spectacle of carnival with artistic experimentation in
a single evening. As local painters put brush to canvas, working in
watercolour, oil and multi-media, entertainers perform
simultaneously." (150)
I CANNOT IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT DR. SEUSS AND WALT DISNEY.
