Pictures,
regardless of how realistic, have elements of abstraction, as a
result of translating the three-dimensional onto a flat surface.
Artists of the late twentieth century, have grown up with both
realism, and abstraction, as well as everything in between. We are
at home with the broadest range of expression in the history of
mankind.
At one time only a certain view, such as the side or front, was
shown. Then came the possibilities of using any or all sides of
something at once. With psychology came interior views.
I find it exciting that we are able to use equal degrees of realism
and abstraction at the same time, in our work.
Art has evolved slowly, over countless periods and styles, to arrive
with striking similarity, at the same point as the designs of early
civilizations such as the Mayas and Aztecs. It has been mentioned
many times, that our modern art, is one of decadence. I choose to
believe it is one of growth. We have come full circle.
"Jazz and the Modern movement were both born at about the same
time, one in America, the other in Europe, both with profound roots
in the mysterious cultures of Africa." (162)
